WHAT IS A-T?
Imagine a disease that combines the worst symptoms of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, immune deficiencies, and cancer. Children with A-T are usually confined to wheelchairs by age 10 and often do not survive their teens. Because A-T is a multi-system disease, scientists believe that A-T research will help more prevalent diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, AIDS, and cancer.
WHY the A-T Cure Team? Kati!
In 2008 I got to teach an amazing second grader named Kati who had a rare disease called Ataxia Telangiectasia, A-T. At that time she was using a walker and transitioned into her wheelchair. Working closely with her family to support her in the classroom, we quickly became family friends.
January 2009, her mom, Jennifer, and I were on a run. I noticed her running shirt with Donald Duck, my favorite Disney Character, and my birthday on it! I knew they were at Disney World, but I thought it was to celebrate Kati’s birthday, but they were also running to support A-T! I knew then that one day, I too would celebrate my birthday at Disney World and run to support Kati and other kids challenged with A-T.
January 9, 2021 is that day! I will be celebrating my 50th birthday, Kati’s 20th, and running with my brother Todd on Team Kati. Todd got to meet Kati and join us on a bike ride with her and her family this summer. She is still the sweet and fun-loving girl I first met. With the support of Kati's family and friends, she has grown up to be one of the most ABLE young adults I know. Kati loves life and is always ready to seek an adventure: adaptive skiing in the winter, biking on her tandem recumbent bike, horseback riding, and even skydiving!
Todd and I are proud to be running for Team Kati and helping to support the Cure for A-T! Please help us help Kati and the Cure too by donating here on our web page.
Tracee, Todd, Kati, and her A-T Friends too!
